Koschorrek, Doğu Prusya'da sıkı bir eğitimden geçerek Stalingrad'a konuşlandırılacak olan 24'üncü Panzer Tümeni'ne alındı. Muharebe hayatının büyük bir kısmını makineli tüfek nişancısı olarak geçirdi. Muharebelerde sergilediği üstün cesaret ve özveriden dolayı 2. Sınıf Demir Haç Nişanı, Bronz Yakın Muharebe Brövesi ve Altın Gazi Brövesi ile taltif edildi. Her ne kadar büyük oranda Stalingrad ve çevresinde görev yapsa da acı tecrübelerle dolu geri çekiliş sürecinde İtalya'nın kana bulanmış doğasına, Romanya ve Danimarka'ya, nihayet dönemin Çekoslovakya'sına savruldu. Sayısız kez ölümle burun buruna gelmesine ve altı kez yaralanmasına rağmen hayata sıkı sıkıya tutundu, savaşmaya devam etti.Sıradan bir asker (Landser) olarak başta Rus Cephesi olmak üzere görev yaptığı farklı noktalarda edindiği tüm şahsi tecrübelerini Kan Kırmızı Karlar adıyla kitaplaştıran Koschorrek, eserinin güvenilir bir kaynak olduğunu özellikle vurguluyor.
