Networks, Protocols & APIs Editorial Review
For those interested in building large-scale networks, OSPF and IS-IS: Choosing an IGP for Large-Scale Networks 1st Edition is a valuable resource. The author, Doyle, compares and contrasts both OSPF and IS-IS protocols side by side. Starting from ground zero, Doyle builds up the knowledge of the reader by covering the history of ARPANET, link-state basics, message types, addressing, neighbor discovery, adjacencies, flooding, link-state database synchronization, area design, scaling, security/reliability, extensibility, MPLS traffic engineering, IPv6 and multi-topology routing. The book provides insights, concerns and points of interest that a senior-level net engineer might Consider, yet are often overlooked by those who are beginners or intermediate in their understanding. Overall, the book is an excellent technical discussion on OSPF versus ISIS, and provides a good history lesson on the early days before OSPF was the de facto enterprise routing protocol. Compared to other Cisco press books, OSPF and IS-IS: Choosing an IGP for Large-Scale Networks 1st Edition is much better, and alongside Routing TCP/IP and The Complete ISIS Routing Protocol, is a must-read for anyone interested in IGP.
